Some ancient remains can be seen. An unidentified Archaic
acropolis and Classical tombs have been noted at Katafiyion, c. 4 m.E.
Remains of Drakanon, another Classical town, lie here Faro at the
East end of the island (1 hr. by boat). Most impressive here is the circular
Tower of the 3rd century. The North coast of the island is best
reached by boat. Evdilos , a pretty village in the middle of the North
coast, with an inn, can be used as a base for the West half of the island. At Kambos
(1 ¾ m.W.), with a museum, are the
remains of ancient Oinoe. The Byzantine town on this site readopted
the name of Doliche, and left the ruins called ‘Palatia’ and an 11th
century church (Ay. Irini). Armenisti lies farther West. Inland the most
interesting excursion is to Kosoikia (45 minuets
South of Evdilos) where the Kastro this Nikarias dates from the 10th
century. |
