Has adopted its ancient name of Thira. One of the great natural curiosities of Greece, is a hug volcano, the center of whick disappeared in an explosion in 1500 BC. Now the outer circle of the island is made of of three small islands and in the center is a new island. Pumice from these island was used to build the Suese Canal in Egypt. In 1967 an complete city was uncovered much like Pompei in Italy. Work continues to this day. As they uncover sections they are roofed over so you have the city completely covered.
