This island was all and more then we hoped for.  We have been going to Greece for almost 30 years now and this is Greece 30 years ago.  I met a young lady there from England.  She was there in June went home sublet her apartment and is now moving to this island permanently THAT SAYS IT ALL.  From the natural thermal baths to the wide sand beaches. More to come in our Feburary update.  We do have some information about property for sale there.

Ikaria, a green, wall-watered island with many scattered hamlets among the olive-groves and vineyards, is noted for its honey as well as for its radioactive hot springs. With Fournoi it forms an eparchy of the Nome of Samos. The name, perhaps deriving from the Phoenician ‘ikor’ in reference to an abundance of fish, attracted to itself a legendary past in which Ikaros and Daedalus figure prominently. In antiquity it had other names, notably Doliche. The South coast rises in a line of steep cliffs. The highest point is Atheras (3415 ft.), in the Southwest, known to ancients as Pramnos or Drakanon.   The little capital, Ayios Kirikos, with 1000 inhabitants, lies on the Southeast shore.  Neighboring to the East is Therma, the principal spa, whose name and fame was similar in antiquity. Some ancient remains can be seen. An unidentified Archaic acropolis and Classical tombs have been noted at Katafiyion, c. 4 m.E. Remains of Drakanon, another  Classical town, lie here Faro at the East end of the island (1 hr. by boat). Most impressive here is the circular Tower of the 3rd century.  The North coast of the island is best reached by boat. Evdilos , a pretty village in the middle of the North coast, with an inn, can be used as a base for the West half of the island. At Kambos (1 ¾ m.W.), with  a museum, are the remains of ancient Oinoe.  The Byzantine town on this site readopted the name of Doliche, and left the ruins called  ‘Palatia’ and an 11th century church (Ay. Irini). Armenisti lies farther West. Inland the most interesting excursion is to Kosoikia (45 minuets  South of Evdilos) where the Kastro this Nikarias dates from the 10th century.
