Hydra is a long narrow island. One of the charms of the island is the almost total lack of motor vehicles due to the inaccessibility of the streets, mostly narrow steps and walkways.  The main mode of transportation is by foot, or by donkey.  The lovely harbor is filled with busy fishermen, small tavernas and upscale shops. Since its discovery by European film makers, the island has aspired to become an artists' colony and a retreat of intellectuals. Idhra which when approached by the sea give one the feeling of a huge amphitheatre. There are a number of imposing mansions built in the 1800 in a Venetian style.  There are a number of hidden beaches to explore.
