Corfu has been influenced throughout the ages by several different countries. What you see today was laid out by the Venetians, who wanted to provide not only defense, but also administrative and domestic needs. This was followed by the French who added some elegance, then the British who built some of the most attractive monuments and palaces found there. It has a truly "European" feel, complete with luxury hotels, fabulous casinos, upscale shopping and nude beaches. Because of the Italian influence most of the people on the island are bilingual, and even their Greek is spoken with an Italian accent. If you are taking the ferry from Italy (Brindisi), Corfu is the first stop on your way to Athens. GREAT LINK FOR LOCAL INFORMATION www.addicted2greece.gr MUSEUM LINKS Corfu
