| One of the closest islands to the mainland. Just go down to the port of Piraeus and grab a ferry, which leave about every 30 minutes. The main town (also called Aegina) is a delightful place with horses carriages, restaurants tucked away on tiny streets, and inexpensive places to stay. Its main attraction is the Temple of Aphaia which sits on a pine covered hill, overlooking the Sardonic Gulf. This building has been called the most perfect Archaic temple in the world. If you don't want to take a bus/taxi to the site (8 miles away) you can easily walk to the Temple of Apollo, famous for its one lone column. This is a great place to spend a day and get the feel of the Greek islands, yet still be back in your Athenian hotel by evening.
